SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Springfield teenager will pursue his boyhood dream of continuing his education at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Congressman Richard Neal presented Edward Thomas with his formal acceptance to the U.S. Naval Academy.
The Pope Francis High School Senior has long dreamed of going to the Naval Flight school in Annapolis Maryland.
“Since I was about five years old, I’ve always wanted to be a pilot and going to the naval academy gives me an opportunity to be a fighter pilot which I’ve always wanted to be,” said Thomas.
Edward’s parents are so proud of their son’s selection to become a midshipman.
Ruliere Thomas, Edward’s dad, is a 22-year-old Army veteran. He told 22News, “I couldn’t be happier than that, he wanted to be a fighter pilot in the name of God, to get in.”
“I’m very proud and excited for him. It’s always something he wanted to do,” said Theresa Thomas, Edward’s mom.
Pope Francis High School tenth graders hope to be accepted into a military academy in the future.
The selection comes at the conclusion of a lengthy selection process.
“When you have a chance to meet these young men and women, you’ve got great faith in the future of the United States,” Congressman Neal told 22News. “They are terrific.”
During his Congressional career, Neal has congratulated at least 200 successful applicants in his district for their acceptance to America’s military academies.
